Winston’s back-up, McGuire, prepares for FSU spotlight

Published

on

When Florida State suspended starting quarterback Jameis Winston on Wednesday for an obscene outburst, back-up Sean McGuire was elevated to lead the nation’s No. 1 team for the first 30 minutes of Saturday night’s game against Clemson.

McGuire has seen very limited action since arriving in Tallahassee in 2012, at the same time Winston arrived.

McGuire, a three-star recruit from West Orange, N.J., had scholarship offers from only FSU, Boston College and Buffalo, according to 247sports. His first couple of years as a Seminole has been spent in Winston’s shadow. But that will change against the No. 22-ranked Tigers.

The Florida State website says McGuire did not pass very much in high school; his team ran the Wing-T. As Winston’s primary back-up, McGuire has completed 16 of 26 passes for 144 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Winston has apologized for his outburst and said he will do whatever he can to help McGuire prepare for Clemson.

“Me and Sean, we’re going to watch film, we’re going to do what we do and I’m going to try my best to put our team in a good chance to win this game,” Winston told the Sun-Sentinel. “I know they’ve got my back.”

Florida State suspended the Heisman Trophy winner after he was seen shouting an obscene phrase in the campus student union.

FSU interim president Garnett S. Stokes and athletics director Stan Wilcox denounced Winston’s “offensive and vulgar” behavior in a statement Wednesday to announce the punishment .

The statement also said Winston would undergo “internal discipline.”
