Chiefs officially acquire OL Grubbs from Saints
The Kansas City Chiefs announced Friday the team officially acquired offensive lineman Ben Grubbs from the New Orleans Saints for an undisclosed draft pick.
The trade, for a fifth-round pick, was reported by media outlets Thursday.
Grubbs, 31, is in the fourth year of a five-year, $36 million contract and was set to count $9.6 million against the salary cap for the Saints, who will see a net savings of $3.6 million.
“We acquired a very good football player via trade with the New Orleans Saints today,” Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said in a statement. “Ben is a talented veteran that has played a key role on a number of productive NFL offenses. He’s smart, physical, and we believe he will be a good addition to our offensive line.”
The 6-foot-3, 310-pound Grubbs has played in 122 games (118 starts) in eight NFL seasons with the Saints (2012-14) and Baltimore Ravens (2007-11). He has served primarily as a left guard.
Grubbs is a two-time Pro Bowler, earning his first selection in 2011 and his most recent in 2013. He has protected the blindsides of two Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks in Drew Brees of the Saints and Joe Flacco of the Ravens.
Grubbs originally entered the NFL as a first-round draft pick (29th overall) of the Ravens in the 2007 NFL Draft. Prior to being drafted, He was an All-American player at Auburn.
