Falcons sign WR Hankerson

Published

on

The Atlanta Falcons signed wide receiver Leonard Hankerson, a third-round pick by the Washington Redskins in 2011.

Hankerson has 81 receptions for 1,081 yards and six touchdowns during his NFL career. He will be reunited with Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, who was his coordinator during his first three seasons in Washington.

The former University of Miami star showed promise as a rookie, including eight catches for 106 yards in his second career start, but suffered a season-ending hip injury. Hankerson returned to start all 16 games in 2012, catching 38 passes for 543 yards and three touchdowns.

He started seven of 10 games in 2013 before suffering a torn ACL and LCL in Week 10. Hankerson began last season on the Physically Unable to Perform list and was activated on Nov. 5, but did not appear in a game.

He is expected to compete for a roster spot behind starters Julio Jones and Roddy white.
