Hoyer deal completes Texans’ QB roulette
The Houston Texans concluded their game of musical quarterbacks on Wednesday, agreeing to a deal with Brian Hoyer that reportedly is worth $10.5 million over two years.
Hoyer had been expected to sign since Monday, when Ryan Mallett agreed to re-sign with a two-year, $7 million contract.
The Texans traded No. 4 quarterback Case Keenum to the St. Louis Rams on Tuesday and dealt former starter Ryan Fitzpatrick to the New York Jets on Wednesday. Hoyer had been talking with the Jets as well.
Hoyer and Mallett, both coached by Bill O’Brien in New England in 2011, are expected to compete for the starting job for O’Brien’s Texans. Mallett beat out Hoyer for the Patriots’ backup job in 2012.
Mallett was traded from New England to Houston last year and took Fitzpatrick’s starting job, but a pectoral injury ended his starting stint after just two starts.
Hoyer had a rough run in Cleveland the past two years, suffering a knee injury in 2013 and then struggling in 13 starts last season (12 touchdowns, 13 interceptions and a 55.3 completion percentage).
