Market developing for Murray, Revis

Published

on

Running back DeMarco Murray and cornerback Darrelle Revis were arguably the top two players left in free agency just an hour into the official start of the 2015 league year Tuesday.

It didn’t take long for a strong market to develop for both players.

Revis was untied from the New England Patriots at 4 p.m. ET after the team passed on his $20 million option. The Patriots want to bring back the All-Pro cover man, but lack the deep pockets of several suitors.

The New York Jets, Green Bay Packers, Cleveland Browns, Oakland Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers all were linked to Revis on Tuesday afternoon. The Kansas City Chiefs, like the Steelers and Patriots, don’t have the financial means to compete with the Jets and Raiders, teams with $40-plus million in salary cap space. The Packers were a surprise entry in the sweepstakes. With Tramon Williams on the market, the Packers have a need at cornerback opposite Sam Shields. Nickel cornerback Davon House signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars — for $6 million per season — on Tuesday.

Murray, the NFL’s leading rushing with over 1,800 yards, won the NFL Offensive Player of the Year award in 2014. At 27, he’s likely looking at his final chance to get a big contract, and the Cowboys have only $11 million to spend with several needs on defense to address — defensive end, linebacker, cornerback and safety.

The Raiders, Jaguars and Philadelphia Eagles could be in the market for Murray. Oakland was reportedly willing to go as high as $9 million per season, which would put Murray in the same class as LeSean McCoy (Bills) and Jamaal Charles (Chiefs) on the running back pay scale.

Dallas opened negotiations with Murray by offering a four-year, $16 million contract that he said was an insult.
