49ers add WR Torrey Smith

Published

on

Torrey Smith and the San Francisco 49ers agreed to a five-year deal on Tuesday.

The former Baltimore Ravens wide receiver was heavily recruited by Anquan Boldin, who last played with Smith in Super Bowl XLVII, when the Ravens beat the 49ers in New Orleans.

Smith penned a heartfelt goodbye to Ravens fans on Sunday and spent time with Boldin before agreeing to a deal that will pay him $40 million over five seasons, with $22 million guaranteed. The Ravens offered $35 million over five years, according to CBS Sports.

As a vertical threat with the Ravens, Smith had 11 touchdowns and averaged 15.7 yards per reception (49 catches) last season. He averaged 17.4 yards per catch in 2013, when he led the Ravens with 65 receptions for 1,128 yards.

The 49ers changed head coaches and are undergoing a major facelift with leading rusher Frank Gore and wide receiver Michael Crabtree expected to play elsewhere next season. San Francisco also lost significant pieces on defense — inside linebacker Patrick Willis retired, defensive lineman Justin Smith is considering the same and several free agents could depart, including cornerback Chris Culliver.
