According to several reports, the St. Louis Rams and Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to a deal to send quarterback Sam Bradford to Philadelphia in exchange for Nick Foles and an undisclosed draft pick.

On the surface, this trade doesn’t seem to make a ton of sense for either party.

Sam Bradford is coming off a pair of torn ACL’s and inserting him into Chip Kelly’s system where quarterbacks run more than usual seems almost suicidal.

From the Rams perspective, Nick Foles is a one-year-wonder whose numbers plummeted once defensive coordinators had the requisite amount of film on him.

Upon further thought, Chip Kelly and the Eagles are getting a major talent upgrade with Bradford, regardless of how long he remains healthy.  With him approaching free agency after the season, Philadelphia gets to “try him on.”

Bradford played in a spread system at Oklahoma and there is some familiarity with Kelly’s system.  If Bradford goes down yet again, the Eagles are left with Mark Sanchez as their backup.  Which was the exact same position they were in a season ago when they won 10 games.

The Rams get a guy in Nick Foles that despite missing most of last season with a shoulder injury, hasn’t had nearly the health concerns that Sam Bradford has.  Foles is an upgrade over any of the quarterbacks that the Rams played with last season and they were a competitive team that was “a quarterback away.”

Nick Foles is not the answer in St. Louis and Rams fans will see that in a few months.  He is usually available and that’s more that can be said of Sam Bradford.

The Eagles won this trade.  They get a quarterback with some spread experience that has first-overall pick pedigree.  Although he’s been rarely available, the Eagles still have the quarterback who led them most of the way last season.

Although the Rams downgraded in terms of talent, they didn’t believe in Sam Bradford anyway and Nick Foles is a slight upgrade over guys like Shaun Hill and Austin Davis.
