Cowboys OT Smith restructures contract

Published

on

Dallas Cowboys All-Pro left tackle Tyron Smith restructured his contract on Monday to clear $8 million of salary cap space.

The newfound room could be used to retain running back DeMarco Murray, one of the top free agents on the market who has yet to reach a deal with another team.

Smith agreed to turn most of his scheduled base salary into a signing bonus. According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the Cowboys turned $10.2 million of Smith’s 2015 base salary of $11,039,000 into signing bonus money.

The Cowboys have been primarily bargain shoppers in free agency the past several years, spending the majority of their cap space to keep their own stars, such as Smith, quarterback Tony Romo and linebacker Sean Lee. The team’s big move this offseason was likely using the franchise designation to retain wide receiver Dez Bryant.
