Rams cut OLs Long & Wells
The St. Louis Rams released veteran offensive linemen Jake Long and Scott Wells on Monday.
The moves will save the Rams $12 million under the $143.3 million salary cap. They had around $2 million in cap space earlier Monday.
Long was the No. 1 overall pick by the Miami Dolphins in 2009 and started 62 games for them before signing a four-year, $34 million contract with St. Louis in 2013.
He started 22 games for the Rams but missed the final nine games last season due to a torn ACL — the same one he tore to end the 2013 season. He was due $9.25 million in 2015, and the team will save $8 million by releasing him.
The Rams are expected to keep in touch with Long as he rehabs from his torn ACL.
Wells, 34, signed with the Rams in 2012 and started 35 games at center in three seasons, including all 16 last season. A seventh-round pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2004, he spent his first eight seasons in Green Bay.
Wells was due to make $4 million in 2015.
“Jake and Scott brought experience and professionalism to our program and we appreciate their commitment and hard work,” coach Jeff Fisher said. “Both of them overcame injury difficulties and provided leadership for our younger players. We look forward to seeing what the future holds for both of them.”
