Report: 49ers believe they will lose Gore

Published

on

The San Francisco 49ers reportedly do not believe they will be able to retain free agent running back Frank Gore, but they are the front-runners for the services of free agent wide receiver Torrey Smith.

NFL.com reported that the 49ers no longer expect to keep Gore. The Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts have shown interest in Gore in the past few days.

Meanwhile, the 49ers are looking through the free agent market for replacements for Gore.

Gore, who will turn 32 in May, rushed 1,106 yards on 255 carries and four touchdowns in 2014. He also had 11 catches for 111 receiving yards.

Gore has rushed for more than 1,100 yards each of the past four seasons. His best season was in 2006 when he ran for 1,695 yards.

The 49ers used a second-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft to take running back Carlos Hyde. He rushed for 333 yards and 4.0 yards per carry in 2014.

Although they may lose Gore, the 49ers appear to be the front-runners for Smith, the Baltimore Sun reported.

The Colts and Houston Texans also showed interest in Smith, but the 49ers and Smith have shown mutual interest in getting a deal done. Smith had 49 receptions for 767 yards and 11 touchdowns for the Baltimore Ravens in 2014.

If the 49ers sign Smith, he would be reunited with his former Ravens teammate and wide receiver Anquan Boldin.

It also might mean the 49ers expect to lose impending free agent wide receiver Michael Crabtree.
