NFL notebook: Steelers release WR Moore
The Pittsburgh Steelers released veteran wide receiver Lance Moore on Monday, a month after he asked to be let go.
Moore, a longtime New Orleans Saint, signed with the Steelers last March and caught 14 passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns in 14 games. He was stuck behind Antonio Brown, Martavis Bryant and Markus Wheaton on the depth chart and wanted to go somewhere he could play more this year.
Moore, 31, was scheduled to make $1.55 million in 2015 — part of the two-year, $3 million contract he signed last year.
He spent his first eight seasons with the Saints, catching 346 passes for 4,281 yards and 38 touchdowns.
—Minnesota general manager Rick Spielman said the Vikings and running back Adrian Peterson have been communicating since last Thursday and the team will continue to have “open dialogue” with the embattled star.
“We are able to have communication now with Adrian,” Spielman told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “We’ll keep all those communications internal. I don’t want to give you guys a blow-by-blow (account) every day.
“I think it’s been very clearly stated that we want to have Adrian Peterson back. There’s no question about the talent. He’s a unique talent and he’s under contract with us next year.”
Peterson is on the commissioner’s exempt list. Previously, the Vikings could communicate with Peterson only via their legal team while he served his suspension.
—Defensive lineman Darnell Dockett was expected to be in San Francisco Monday night to meet with the 49ers, ESPN reported.
The Arizona Cardinals released Dockett on Friday. He missed the 2014 season because of a torn ACL.
The 34-year-old Dockett is drawing interest from a number of teams, according to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, who said Dockett’s future will be resolved by the end of the week.
—The Philadelphia Eagles signed linebacker Brad Jones to a two-year contract.
Jones, 28, had been released by the Green Bay Packers on Feb. 20.
A seventh-round pick of the Packers in 2009, he tallied 293 tackles, 10 sacks and two forced fumbles in 76 games (36 starts) with Green Bay.
In seven playoff games, he had 32 tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble.
—San Diego’s Dwight Freeney isn’t quite ready to call it a career.
The Chargers outside linebacker and seven-time Pro Bowler told UT-San Diego he has decided to play a 14th season. Where he will play is the big question — Freeney will become an unrestricted free agent next week.
Freeney, 35, is coming off a productive season in which he stayed healthy and led the Chargers wit 40 quarterback hurries.
— The Baltimore Ravens cut cornerback Victor Hampton on Monday, two days after he was arrested on charges of driving under the influence.
Hampton, 22, reportedly was driving 100 mph in a 55 mph zone in Charlotte, N.C., when he was stopped at 12:26 a.m. Saturday. He was charged with speeding, reckless driving and open container violations. He was booked into Mecklenburg County jail and released on bond.
Two passengers in his car were cited for carrying concealed weapons.
