Redskins cut DLs Cofield, Bowen

Published

A day after signing Ricky Jean Francois, the Washington Redskins dumped two other defensive linemen, Barry Cofield and Stephen Bowen, on Friday.

Cofield, 30, played in just eight games last season due to groin and ankle injuries that landed him on temporary injured reserve.

Cofield, who signed a six-year, $36 million deal with Washington in 2011, had started every game the previous three years. In four seasons with Washington, Cofield tallied 100 tackles, nine sacks and 15 pass deflections.

The Redskins reportedly had been trying to get Cofield to lower his $5 million payout for 2015, but they apparently could not come to an agreement. The team will save $4.12 million by releasing him, and he will count $3.56 million in dead money.

Bowen, 30, was scheduled to make $5.5 million in the final year of his five-year, $27.5 million deal, so the team will add that money to its estimated $23 million in salary cap space. Bowen will count $2.52 million.

Bowen’s best year with Washington was his first, as he collected 41 tackles and six sacks in 2011.

A knee injury suffered in 2013 affected his 2014 season as well. He started the season on the PUP list while recovering from microfracture surgery and played in just eight games.

Cofield and Bowen leave as Jean Francois arrives. A recent cut by the Indianapolis Colts, Jean Francois signed a three-year deal worth $9 million on Thursday.

Jean Francois likely will replace pending free agent Jarvis Jenkins on a line that includes Jason Hatcher and Chris Baker.

On Friday, the Redskins also re-signed right tackle Tom Compton, who started nine games in 2014, to a one-year deal.
