Minnesota TE Williams still a first-rounder

Published

INDIANAPOLIS — Minnesota tight end Maxx Williams isn’t a speed demon.

That is reflected on his tape and was reinforced Friday at the NFL Combine when he clocked an unofficial 4.77 and 4.90 in the 40-yard dash.

But while not a true burner, Williams, NFLDraftScout.com’s top-ranked tight end, is a good football player who was first-round worthy yesterday, he is first-round worthy today and he will be first-round worthy in April.

Despite some social media criticism that suggests Williams’ draft status will be impacted, a 40-yard dash doesn’t change that. His game isn’t predicated on speed. But it’s worth noting over the first 10 yards, Williams was timed at 1.58 seconds — that’s moving.

Will Williams hear his name called in the top 32 picks? Maybe. But if not, it won’t be because of a straight-line speed test.

“I think just the fact you’re going in the first round is a great honor,” Williams said Wednesday during his media session. “I mean, not many people can say they’re first round. Not many people can say they went in the first round and so did their father, so having an opportunity to go in the first round — it would be a moment I would remember for the rest of my life.”

Although the 40-yard dashes weren’t overly impressive, Williams showed off his soft hands in the gauntlet drill and other receiving tests in Indianapolis, using his natural adjustment skills and focus to easily secure grabs.

He has also carried himself well during the interview process with one NFL team source telling me that his “confidence and talent for a 20-year old” really stands out during team meetings.

Williams said he is expected to get stronger as he gets older.

“I have to go out there and show scouts and GMs and coaches just what I can do: Run as fast as I can and try to show them I have great hands and good technique where I can be on the line blocking,” he said.

Williams is battling with Miami (Fla.) tight end Clive Walford to be the first tight end drafted in the 2015 NFL Draft.
