Elway confident Manning will play in ’15

INDIANAPOLIS – John Elway does not have a “definitive answer,” but said at the Scouting Combine on Thursday that he believes Peyton Manning will be the Denver Broncos’ quarterback in 2015.

Elway is not allowed to talk to Manning about football-related matters at this point of the offseason, but said the two spoke after Manning underwent a physical in New Orleans recently to examine the health of his surgically-repaired neck.

“He felt good of the results that came out of that,” said Elway, the Broncos’ general manager and vice president of football operations. “I believe he’ll be back, and I believe he’ll be our quarterback next year.”

Manning will turn 39 years old on March 24, and Elway is familiar with the process his quarterback is going through in evaluating his future. Elway retired after winning his second championship in Super Bowl XXXIII.

“There’s no rush. I told Peyton after the year that when I thought about it (as a player), I took my time. He’s got all the time he wants.”

There has been some conjecture that Manning is evaluating the offense that will be installed by new head coach Gary Kubiak. Elway sees the new scheme as a benefit to Manning.

“I think for an older quarterback, it’s a perfect system to be in,” said Elway, who added that the only thing that can add to Manning’s legacy at this point is another ring. “You don’t need to throw for another yard, you don’t need to throw another touchdown pass. Where he can really add to his legacy is to win another Super Bowl.”
