Vikings claim onside-kick goat from Packers
The Minnesota Vikings claimed tight end Brandon Bostick off waivers from the Green Bay Packers on Wednesday.
Bostick was the player at the center of the Packers’ lost onside kick in the NFC Championship Game loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
“Boom! We Got Action!” Bostick wrote on his Twitter account Wednesday afternoon.
The former Division II receiver spent three years with the Packers, who tried to develop him as a tight end. He caught nine passes for 123 and two touchdowns while playing behind Andrew Quarless and Richard Rodgers.
Bostick became a household name among NFL fans nationwide for his botched recovery of an onside kick late in regulation time of the NFC title game on Jan. 18. It helped to allow the Seahawks to rally from 12 points down in the final few minutes and win in overtime, 28-22.
As the Seahawks kicked off after cutting the deficit to 19-14 with 2:09 left, Bostick was supposed to block, allowing Jordy Nelson to catch the ball. But the ball bounced right to Bostick, who tried and failed to secure it. Seattle’s Chris Matthews recovered, and the Seahawks scored the go-ahead touchdown four plays later.
The Packers tied it with a 48-yard field goal by Mason Crosby with 14 seconds left, but Seattle won the overtime coin toss and drove 87 yards in six plays, winning on a 35-yard pass from Russell Wilson to Jermaine Kearse.
On Jan. 30, the Packers fired special-teams coach Shawn Slocum, who was seen berating Bostick on the sideline after the onside kick.
