Welker reportedly plans to play in 2015
Wide receiver Wes Welker reportedly plans to return for another season in 2015.
Welker, 33, reportedly was considering retirement, but he told Mike Klis of the Denver Post on Monday that he intends to return for a 12th season.
“Just getting ready for 2015,” Welker said in a text message to Klis. Asked about the retirement report by FOX Sports last week, Welker replied, “Never ever came out of my mouth.”
Welker just concluded a two-year, $12 million contract with the Denver Broncos and is scheduled to be a free agent March 10.
The Broncos’ free-agent priorities figure to be receiver Demaryius Thomas, tight end Julius Thomas and defensive tackle Terrance Knighton. The team also must decide how to handle quarterback Peyton Manning, who reportedly is prepared to play another season but is due $19 million.
Welker’s future has been questioned because he has suffered at least three concussions with the Broncos. He caught just 49 passes for 464 yards in 14 games last season — his worst numbers since 2005 with the Miami Dolphins.
After catching more than 100 passes in five of his six years with the New England Patriots, Welker has caught 122 in two years with Denver.
