Packers’ McCarthy may hand off play-calling duties

Published

on

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy is strongly considering handing off his play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Tom Clements.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette confirmed a WDUZ radio report that Clements would likely be given the title of associate head coach and wide receivers coach Edgar Bennett could be promoted to offensive coordinator.

The changes would be the next round of offseason staff adjustments since the Green Bay’s 28-22 meltdown overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks in NFC championship game. McCarthy fired special teams coach Shawn Slocum on Jan. 30, and assistant special teams coach Ron Zook is expected to replace him.

McCarthy, in his season-ending press conference, insisted the loss to Seattle will be a positive.

“Every game you compete in is a unique experience, and the only way you benefit from that experience is you have to be able to learn from the victories and defeats,” he said. “That’s the mindset of an outfit, that’s the mindset of a champion. That will never change. The 2015 football team will not bear the burden of what happened in 2014 or before that. That’s not the way we operate. We won’t internalize the things that go on outside our building.

“We’re going to create another opportunity to build the best football team that we can in 2015, and we’re going to go for it.”
