Packers expected to promote Zook to special teams coach
The Green Bay Packers are expected to promote Ron Zook to special teams coordinator, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Zook served as an assistant special teams coach this past season with Green Bay under Shawn Slocum, who was fired last week.
Zook was a longtime college assistant before taking his first NFL job as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ special teams coordinator from 1996-1998.
Zook also was the Kansas City Chiefs’ defensive backs coach (1999) and New Orleans Saints’ defensive coordinator (2000-01). Packers head coach Mike McCarthy was on the Saints’ staff with Zook as offensive coordinator.
Zook, 60, returned to the college game to be the head coach of Florida from 2002-2004 and Illinois from 2005-2011. He took two years off from coaching before taking the assistant special teams coaching job with Green Bay in 2014.
The Packers finished 32nd in overall special teams performance in 2014 based on The Dallas Morning News’ annual rankings.
