TCU’s Kevin White Makes a Name for Himself at Senior Bowl
TCU cornerback Kevin White follows in the footsteps of former teammate and current mentor Jason Verrett.
West Virginia WR Kevin White never showed up at the Senior Bowl, but the other Kevin White — the TCU cornerback — showed up and showed out.
The latter White (5-foot-10, 174 pounds) relished the opportunity to go against the best talent in the nation and more than held his own throughout the week, battling with South Team’s deep and dynamic receiving corps.
“I’m just trying to showcase my ability,” White said. “TCU is not the biggest school. We had a good year, but we’re not the biggest school. You don’t get to see a lot of us play sometimes, so I’m just trying to showcase my ability and show what TCU football is about.”
Ironically, White’s strong performance led to comparisons to a former TCU player, cornerback Jason Verrett. A first-round pick of the Chargers in last year’s draft, Verrett has served as a mentor for White.
“He’s just a great player and a smart player,” White said of Verrett. “You try to take all the little things you can from a player like that. I still talk to him now and I’ve met with him out in San Diego. We’ve talked about how the draft is going to be and how the Combine is going to be. He’s someone I’ve always looked up to and he sheds knowledge on me.”
So what advice did Verrett give White on the pre-draft process?
“Just as far as the whole process, he said just take it all in,” White said. “It’s going to be a long process, just let it run its course. And when the Combine does come, just be smooth.”
There is a legitimate chance White could end up reuniting with Verrett in San Diego. The Chargers are in the market for cornerback help, as starting CBs Brandon Flowers and Shareece Wright are both scheduled to become unrestricted free agents.
White is likely to hear his name called between the third and fifth rounds of April’s draft.
“That would be awesome,” said White of the possibility of winding up in San Diego. “If it did end up like that where I could play with [Verrett] again, that would be awesome to play in San Diego with the Chargers.”
It would also be convenient for White, who will spend the coming weeks working out at EXOS in San Diego.
Wherever White ends up, he believes he will have a leg-up on other rookies thanks to his Senior Bowl experience. He was able to spend the week working with the coaches of the Jacksonville Jaguars, who are no strangers to developing young cornerback talent.
“It’s definitely a learning experience,” said White of working with the Jaguars coaches. “You’re learning from guys at the top level who’ve been doing it for a long time.”
White knows he cannot get too excited when he hears the name “Kevin White” called on draft day, as the first time that happens it will refer to the dynamic playmaker from West Virginia. But it should be noted that TCU’s White more than held his own in the meeting between the two Kevin Whites this season, holding the Mountaineers’ star receiver to just three catches and 28 yards.
Performances like that one, along with his impressive showing during Senior Bowl week, have his arrow pointed firmly upward.
