Lynch’s Seahawks teammate fined for obscene gesture

Published

The NFL, which fined Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch $20,000 for grabbing his crotch after scoring the go-ahead touchdown in the NFC title game, also fined teammate Chris Matthews for the way he congratulated Lynch.

Matthews was hit with an $11,025 fine for allegedly making an obscene gesture while shaking Lynch’s hand after Lynch had scored on a 24-yard run in the fourth quarter of Seattle’s 28-22 overtime win over the Green Bay Packers.

A tweet by Lynch appeared to express his displeasure over the fine levied against Matthews: “I feel embarrassed to work for a particular organization that fined a teammate of mine for shaking my hand after a touchdown.”

The Matthews fine was one of four stemming from that game. In addition to the $20,000 penalty against Lynch, Green Bay linebacker Clay Matthews was fined $22,050 for an illegal hit on quarterback Russell Wilson and Seattle guard J.R Sweezy was fined $8,268 for an unnecessary roughness penalty on Matthews.
