NFL AM: Texans Bringing Back Mallett?
Texans want Mallett back… Cardale Jones a first rounder?
Source: Texans Want To Bring Back Mallett
The Houston Texans have a quandary at quarterback. With Ryan Fitzpatrick clearly not being the answer and more questions than answers surrounding former fourth-round pick Tom Savage, the Texans likely answer at quarterback is not currently on their roster.
But he may have been on their roster in 2014.
Houston’s look into Ryan Mallett was brief as he only had two starts for the team before suffering a pectoral injury that cost him his season. Still, that was enough for the team to pursue bringing him back in free agency.
“We would like to bring Ryan (Mallett) back next year,” a Texans source told Football Insiders.
The Texans aren’t worried about Mallet’s availability on the open market.
“He shouldn’t get much money elsewhere,” the source added.
Apparently Mallett made a solid impression with his teammates in his brief time after being traded from the New England Patriots.
The Texans are slated to select 16th in this April’s NFL Draft where they’re not likely to find one of the two supposedly “elite” signal callers in the draft.
In his two starts, Mallett completed 41 of 75 throws, for 400 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. The Texans beat the Browns, 23-7 and lost to the Bengals, 22-13.
Cardale Jones Could Be A First-Round Pick
After his performance in the first ever College Football National Championship Game, Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones has a difficult decision to make on his future.
Jones has only started three games as a student-athlete but he’s the only player in the history of college football to win a ring after each start.
With a decision on his future needed by Thursday, Jones must decide whether to return to Ohio State and compete for a starting job with J.T. Barrett and possibly Braxton Miller or enter the NFL Draft.
Jones can put the NFL scouts in an unenviable position as he only has three games of film to look at, all superb.
“I would select him in the back half of the first round,” a league source told Football Insiders. “He has physical skills that make you drool amd and he’s a better gamble later in the first (round) than those guys at the top (of the draft).”
Jones will be an interesting case study if he declares for the draft. It’s likely that his stock will never be higher than it is now.
