Bucs’ Smith: No talks with Cowboys’ Marinelli
Buccaneers head coach Lovie Smith denied a report Sunday night that he is ready to hire Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli to the same position in Tampa Bay.
Pro Football Talk, citing an anonymous league source, reported after the Cowboys’ playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday that Marinelli likely would move to take the Tampa Bay job.
Smith told the Tampa Bay Times that he had not spoken with Marinelli, adding, “(There is) no validity to the story.”
Dallas head coach Jason Garrett, offensive coordinator Scott Linehan and Marinelli are all free agents with the Cowboys’ season now concluded.
“There will be changes,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said, according to the Tampa Bay Times. “They’re coaches that are highly thought of. They will be looking at their individual situations and we will be looking at the overall staff.”
“(Marinelli and Linehan) did a great job as well. In general, this staff is one that you’d like to keep going with a lot of other things influencing your ability to keep a staff together.”
Leslie Frazier remains the Buccaneers’ defensive coordinator. Tampa Bay finished 25th in total defense this season (368.9 yards per game) and 25th in points allowed (25.6 points per game).
