Former Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Jethro Pugh died Wednesday of natural causes at age 70.

Pugh was part of the “Doomsday Defense” that helped the Cowboys win two Super Bowls in the 1970s.

For five straight seasons from 1968 to 1972 while playing next to defensive tackle Bob Lilly, Pugh led the Cowboys in sacks. His 95 1/2 career sacks rank sixth in team history.

“This is a sad day for Cowboys fans, and our thoughts and prayers go out to Jethro’s family,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. “He was loved and appreciated by his teammates and Cowboys fans for decades, and his spirit will be felt when our team travels to Green Bay this weekend.”

Pugh played in the famed Ice Bowl game against the Green Bay Packers in 1967 won the Green Bay 21-17. The Cowboys face the Packers in an NFC Divisional game on Sunday at Lambeau field.

An 11th-round draft pick in 1965 out of Elizabeth City State, Pugh spent 14 years with the Cowboys, the fourth-longest run of any player in franchise history.

After retiring from the NFL in 1978, Pugh went on to become a successful businessman.
