Giants WR Beckham Jr. added to Pro Bowl

New York Giants rookie wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was added to the Pro Bowl roster Wednesday after Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson dropped out due to injury.

Beckham, the No. 12 overall pick in the 2014 draft, is the first Giants rookie named to the Pro Bowl since Jeremy Shockey in 2002 and the first Giants receiver to represent the team in the league’s annual all-star game since Victor Cruz in 2012.

“It is definitely awesome,” Beckham said in a statement released by the Giants. “It is something that means a lot to me, and I am definitely going to cherish the moment. I’m very excited to be going to the Pro Bowl.

“The goal (entering the season) is to be either in the Pro Bowl or the Super Bowl. That is every year. That is something you want to be able to build on and put that on your resume. (We) didn’t end up making it to the Super Bowl, but I did get the invite to the Pro Bowl, so I am very excited and blessed for the opportunity.”

Beckham’s incredible one-handed catch electrified the crowd in a nationally televised Sunday night loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Nov. 23.

Beckham, who missed all of training camp and the first four games of the season with a hamstring injury, finished with 91 catches for 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns in only 12 games. His nine straight games with at least 90 receiving yards tied an NFL record set by Michael Irvin of the Dallas Cowboys in 1995.

Johnson, in 13 games this season for the Lions, had 71 catches for 1,077 yards and eight touchdowns. He missed three games and was limited in two others with an ankle injury.

Johnson caught five pases for 85 yards in last week’s 24-20 wild-card loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

The Pro Bowl will be contested Jan. 25 in Glendale, Ariz., site of the Super Bowl.
