Report: Bears plan to interview Mike Shanahan

Published

on

Mike Shanahan has a fourth possible suitor.

The longtime NFL head coach recently interviewed with the Oakland Raiders, San Francisco 49ers and Buffalo Bills, and he is due to speak with the Chicago Bears about their head-coaching vacancy once they hire a new general manager, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday.

The Bears fired coach Marc Trestman and GM Phil Emery at the end of a 5-11 season.

If Shanahan ends up in Chicago, he could be reunited with quarterback Jay Cutler, whom he coached for three years with the Denver Broncos after drafting him in 2006.

Shanahan, a 62-year-old Illinois native and Eastern Illinois alumnus, got his start as a head coach with the Raiders, posting an 8-12 record in 1988 and 1989 when the team was still in Los Angeles.

He made the most of his second chance as a head coach, guiding the Broncos to back-to-back Super Bowl titles in 1997 and 1998. Shanahan remained in Denver through 2008, then became the Washington Redskins’ coach in 2010.

Shanahan spent the 2014 season out of football after being fired by the Redskins in December 2013. He finished 24-40 in four seasons with the Redskins.

Over 20 seasons as a head coach, 14 of them in Denver, Shanahan has a 170-138 regular-season record and an 8-6 postseason record.

Shanahan spent 1992-94 as the 49ers’ offensive coordinator.
