Rutgers University reveled Saturday in its first game against a Big Ten team as a member of the conference. A record crowd watched as Penn State escaped Piscataway, N.J., with a 13-10 victory.

On Monday, the university apologized for what the school’s athletic director called “inappropriate and offensive” behavior by some Rutgers fans.

Much of that behavior was related to the Jerry Sandusky child sex-abuse scandal that rocked the Nittany Lions program. T-shirts with “Ped State” on them reportedly were being sold outside High Point Solutions Stadium mocking the former Penn State assistant coach. Chants of “Sandusky” during the game were especially troubling.

Other instances of fans trying to make light of child sex abuse were reported.

Rutgers AD Julie Hermann apologized to Penn State in a statement, saying that she had been in contact with that school’s athletic director on Monday.

“On behalf of Rutgers University and the Athletic Department, we would like to apologize for the regrettable actions of a handful of Rutgers fans on Saturday that do not convey the message of good, competitive spirit that we look forward to having with our new Big Ten rival Penn State University. …

“It is unfortunate that the actions of a few spoiled an otherwise historic and recording-setting night that Rutgers fans provided for our first Big Ten football game.”
