Manziel denies partying caused tardiness

Published

Johnny Manziel said reports that his tardiness to Saturday’s walkthrough was caused by late-night partying are “100 percent false.”

The Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback said he went out with friends from his hometown of Kerrville, Texas on Friday night in Cleveland, but he didn’t throw a party.

Manziel admitted he was not at the team’s Saturday walkthrough and treatment sessions at the appropriate time, which led to a fine.

“It’s about action,” Manziel said Monday. “It’s about being accountable and doing what I’m gonna say instead of looking like a jackass.”

Manziel said he was not with wide receiver Josh Gordon — who was suspended for missing the walkthrough as an active player — on Friday night but saw him earlier in the day and was not responsible for Gordon’s absence.

Manziel, who was placed on injured reserve after sustaining a hamstring injury in the Week 16 loss to Carolina, said he wants to show the Browns that he will work harder and become more accountable.

“Either I’m going to learn or I’m going to be finding something else to do,” he said.

According to ESPN, Manziel apologized to team veterans, who were vocal after Sunday’s 20-10 loss to the Baltimore Ravens that the organization needs players who are “all in.”

“It sucks because of the perception I’ve based around myself — I’ve done this to myself — that that was allowed to be reported and people are just allowed to nod their head and act like that went on,” Manziel said.

Manziel started two games this season and completed 18 of 35 passes for 175 yards and added nine rushes for 29 yards.
