NFL roundup: L.A. on hold, Goodell tells teams

Published

on

Commissioner Roger Goodell informed teams there would be no relocation to Los Angeles for the 2015 season.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Goodell reached out to officials with the Oakland Raiders, San Diego Chargers and St. Louis Rams to tell them Los Angeles is not an option for 2015. All three teams are embroiled in stadium issues. The Raiders, who are in Oakland by way of Los Angeles, have no stadium lease for 2015 and owner Mark Davis investigated other options, including San Antonio.

The Rams are in a similar spot with a building the team rates as antiquated — the Edward Jones Dome — but no plan for a major renovation or new stadium site. The Chargers this week announced they would be at Qualcomm Stadium for 2015, but their future is not clear beyond next year.

Goodell said at the NFL owner’s meetings in March the league is confident a team will make its way to Los Angeles “when the situation is right.” There are also talks of a team in London, which the commissioner discussed at length during the three International Series games in England this season.

The NFL has been trying to land a team in Los Angeles since the Raiders went back to Oakland in 1995 and the league is playing a series of games in London to generate global interest in the sport.

—Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning questionable to play Monday night’s game at the Cincinnati Bengals.

The team listed Manning as questionable with a thigh injury on Saturday’s injury report. Manning briefly left last Sunday’s game against the San Diego Chargers with the injury.

Coach John Fox said Manning took a similar number of snaps in practice Saturday as he has throughout the season.

—Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton had no setbacks on Saturday and will start Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns.

Newton sustained two fractures in his lower back in an automobile accident less than two weeks ago.

On Friday, Newton was listed as probable on the Panthers’ injury report and coach Ron Rivera said he was confident that he would start. The team’s medical staff on Saturday cleared Newton.

—The Dallas Cowboys expect running back DeMarco Murray to play Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts, despite a broken left hand.

Murray was listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report. His playing status is considered a game-time decision.

Murray was medically cleared to play during the week. The team will make a final decision after the hand is tested during pregame warmups.

—The San Francisco 49ers placed linebacker Chris Borland on injured reserve and promoted linebacker Chase Thomas from the practice squad to the active roster.

Borland, a rookie who is out for the season with an ankle injury, played 14 games this season, including starts in each of the last eight. He had a team-leading 128 tackles with five pass breakups, two interceptions, one sack and one fumble recovery.

Thomas originally signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Stanford in 2013.

—The Cleveland Browns placed defensive back Tashaun Gipson on injured reserve and promoted linebacker Scott Solomon from the practice squad to the active roster.

Gipson started the first 11 games of the season before sustaining a knee injury in the fourth quarter at the Atlanta Falcons on Nov. 23. Despite missing the past three games, Gipson is tied for the NFL lead with six interceptions this season.

Solomon has played 20 NFL games with the Tennessee Titans (2012), New York Jets (2013) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2014).

—The Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed safety Major Wright on injured reserve and promoted cornerback C.J. Wilson from the practice squad to the active roster.

Wright earlier was ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers with a rib injury. Wright played in 12 games with seven starts, totaling 51 tackles, with two for loss.

—The Oakland Raiders placed cornerback Tarell Brown on injured reserve and signed linebacker Spencer Hadley from their practice squad.

Brown, who was signed by the team as an unrestricted free agent in March, has been dealing with a foot injury. He started 14 games this season, totaling 66 tackles and 16 passes defensed.

Hadley was originally signed by the New Orleans Saints in May before being waived in June. Oakland signed him in August, before waiving him at the end of training camp and re-signing him to the team’s practice squad two days later.

—Green Bay Packers tackle Bryan Bulaga was upgraded to probable for Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Bulaga was listed as questionable on the team’s injury report with a concussion.

—Miami Dolphins wide receiver Matt Hazel was signed off the practice squad and added to the active roster.

Linebacker Jake Knott was waived to make room for Hazel on the roster.
