Panthers QB Newton set to start Sunday
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton had no setbacks on Saturday and will start Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns.
Newton sustained two fractures in his lower back in an automobile accident less than two weeks ago.
On Friday, Newton was listed as probable on the Panthers’ injury report and coach Ron Rivera said he was confident that he would start.
The team’s medical staff on Saturday cleared Newton.
Newton missed last Sunday’s win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Backup quarterback Derek Anderson started against the Bucs. Newton, a two-time Pro Bowler, returned to practice Wednesday.
The Panthers need to win to keep alive their slim hopes of winning the NFC South despite a 5-8-1 record.
