Newton works with first team in Panthers’ practice
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton took most of the reps in practice with the first-team offense on Thursday and could be on track to start Sunday against the Cleveland Browns after sitting out last week with injuries suffered in an auto accident.
Newton returned to practice on Wednesday — one week after a rollover crash near Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte left him with two fractured transverse processes in his back — and split reps with backup Derek Anderson.
Carolina coach Ron Rivera has yet to name a starter for Sunday’s game, but reports from practice on Thursday indicated that Newton threw a 65-yard pass and looked good.
Despite a 5-8-1 record, the Panthers remain in the hunt for the NFC South Division title.
