Cards sign Clemons, place Ellington on IR

The Arizona Cardinals signed safety Chris Clemons after placing running back Andre Ellington on injured reserve Monday.

Following Sunday’s 17-14 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, coach Bruce Arians said Ellington would not play again this season after having sports hernia surgery.

Clemons, who played for the Miami Dolphins from 2009-13, signed with the Houston Texans in March but was cut in August. He had 92 tackles and an interception with the Dolphins in 2013. He started all 32 games for the Dolphins in his last two seasons.

The Cardinals were without safety Tyrann Mathieu on Sunday. He is expected to miss at least another week and possibly two after undergoing surgery last week to repair a fractured thumb.
