Report reveals security concerns around Super Bowl XLVII
The post-halftime blackout at the Superdome in New Orleans was just one of several security concerns surrounding Super Bowl XLVII, according to a report.
While the blackout after Beyonce’s halftime show created brief concerns about foul play and possible terrorism, NBC Washington’s News4 I-Team uncovered other incidents surrounding the game between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers in February 2013.
A two-year review of law enforcement communication in the hours before and during the Super Bowl revealed several threats of explosives and a case of stolen police guns.
According to the NBC Washington report, the night before the game, an unknown caller from a pay phone in Baltimore reported that “the Mercedes-Benz Building in New Orleans is going to blow up. It’s gonna blow up after Beyonce’s performance.” Law enforcement officers never found the caller.
Police also received a report of “systematically placed explosives” at the Krazy Korner Bar in New Orleans. They closed off the area but found no bombs.
On game day, burglars took guns and ammunition from a New Orleans police car. And two hours before kickoff, the FBI investigated another bomb threat directed toward the Superdome’s staging area. The area was determined to be safe.
Although the timing of the stadium power outage was suspicious considering the bomb threat, the blackout was not deemed to be connected to any of the day’s previous events and was blamed on a breakdown in the Superdome’s power system.
