Jaguarrs 25, Giants 24

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Josh Scobee nailed a 43-yard field goal with 28 seconds left to lift the Jacksonville Jaguars to an improbable 25-24 win over the New York Giants at EverBank Field on Sunday.

The Jaguars trailed 21-0 in the middle of the second quarter but came to life with two defensive touchdowns and completed the rally with an 11-play drive. Scobee’s second field goal of the game spoiled a return to Jacksonville for Giants head coach Tom Coughlin, who coached the Jaguars for eight seasons before he was fired following the 2002 season.

With public debate raging about Coughlin’s future, the Giants (3-9) allowed 22 unanswered points before kicker Josh Brown made a 33-yard field goal to put New York on top 24-22 with 3:26 left in the game.

The Jaguars then put together an 11-play, 55-yard march down to the Giants 25-yard line. Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles had the two biggest plays on the drive. Bortles faked a handoff and then took off around left end, gaining 11 yards and a critical first down before scampering for 20 yards on another to gain a first down at the 25 with less than a minute to play. Three plays netted zero yards but Scobee drilled the game-winner on fourth down.

Bortles had five carries for 68 yards in the game and threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Marqise Lee, but it was Jacksonville’s defense that dominated the second half.

The Giants scored touchdowns on their first three possessions to take a 21-0 lead. Rashad Jennings, who played for the Jaguars from 2009-2012, scored a pair of touchdowns and quarterback Eli Manning teamed with Preston Parker from 3 yards out for the other score. Manning completed seven passes for 90 yards to rookie wide receiver Odell Beckham, but he lost two fumbles that led to points.

New York thoroughly dominated the first 23 1/2 minutes. When the Giants scored their third touchdown of the first half with 6:30 remaining, they held a 230-4 advantage in total yards.

The Jaguars came alive and put together their only sustained drive of the half, marching 70 yards to the 10-yard line before Scobee kicked a 28-yard field goal for the Jaguars only points of the half. An apparently touchdown from Bortles to wide receiver Cecil Shorts was called back because offensive tackle Luke Joeckel was flagged for holding.

Manning was sacked and fumbled near his own goal line, for one of three Gaints turnovers, and J.T. Thomas recovered in the end zone to close the gap to 23-10.

In the fourth quarter, the Jaguars defense came up big again when cornerback Dwayne Gratz forced a fumble by tight end Larry Donnell following a short completion. Cornerback Aaron Colvin picked up the loose ball and returned it 41 yards for a touchdown to give Jacksonville its first lead of the game at 22-21.

NOTES: The Giants are 1-5 on the road this season and have lost seven consecutive games since beating the Atlanta Falcons on Oct. 5. … The Jaguars had four sacks and three takeaways. … The Giants averaged only 3.3 yards per carry on 35 rushing attempts but dominated time of possession (34:39-25:21).
