Bears put LB Briggs on IR
Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs was placed on season-ending injured reserve Friday.
Briggs suffered a groin injury last Sunday in the Bears’ win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and did not play in Chicago’s loss to the Detroit Lions on Thursday in Detroit.
The seven-time Pro Bowler had 63 tackles, 2 1/2 tackles for loss and one interception this season. He also missed three games earlier in the season with a rib injury.
The 34-year-old Briggs’ 170 starts for the Bears are the fifth highest total in franchise history, trailing Walter Payton (184), Olin Kreutz (183), Brian Urlacher (180) and Mike Singletary (172). In 173 career games, Briggs has 1,564 tackles, 95.5 TFLs, 16 interceptions, 15 sacks, 19 forced fumbles, seven fumble recoveries and six defensive touchdowns.
Briggs led the team in tackles in 2004, 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2012. He is scheduled to become a free agent during the offseason.
