TE Celek to return for 49ers

Published

on

The San Francisco 49ers activated tight end Garrett Celek from injured reserve and elevated tight end Asante Cleveland to the active roster on Thursday.

To clear roster space, the 49ers put tight end Derek Carrier on injured reserve with a foot problem and waived linebacker Chase Thomas.

Celek had been on injured reserve since Aug. 25 after underdoing a back procedure during preseason camp. The former undrafted free agent has played in 25 games the past two seasons for the 49ers and has six receptions for 89 yards.

Cleveland joined the 49ers on May 12 as an undrafted rookie free agent and was waived Aug. 30 before joining the practice squad the next day. He was placed on the active roster Sept. 20 and played in one game before returning to the practice squad on Sept. 25.

Carrier played in 16 games and started one for the 49ers the past two seasons. He had nine receptions for 105 yards in 11 games this year.

Thomas was promoted to the active roster on Nov. 1 and had appeared in three games.
