Griffin on benching: ‘Coach’s decision’

Published

on

Benched Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III was a man of few words Thursday when asked for his reaction to Colt McCoy being named the starter.

“Coach’s decision,” Griffin said. “I’m here to help this team win.”

Coach Jay Gruden announced Tuesday that McCoy would start ahead of Griffin on Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts.

Griffin spoke for 40 seconds while walking to the locker room after practice Thursday, repeating himself by saying, “Like I said, coach’s decision.”

The third-year quarterback refused to speak with the media on Wednesday about his demotion but appeared to be upset.

Gruden said Griffin needs more time to develop his game. Griffin led the offense to only 20 points combined in the past two games after returning from a dislocated ankle.

“Hey, I’m just focused on helping us win,” Griffin said. “That’s all I can do.”

Griffin avoided discussing his future. He’ll be entering the final year of his contract, but the Redskins can offer him a fifth-year extension.

“Just be ready to play and be here to help this team in any way I can,” Griffin repeated.
