Saints’ nose tackle may be out for season
METAIRIE, La. — The New Orleans Saints must endure another significant loss due to an injury, this one occurring in Monday night’s 34-27 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
Nose tackle Brodrick Bunkley is probably done for the season with a torn quadriceps muscle. This is especially bad news for a team already ranked 27th in the league against the run.
Bunkley was hurt on a running play in the second quarter while trying to tackle elusive running back Justin Forsett, who had a career-high 182 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 22 carries. Bunkley managed to walk off the field with the help of trainers, but didn’t return.
If Bunkley is out for the rest of the season, he would be the third Saints defender to suffer a season-ending injury in the past three games.
Backup safety Vinnie Sunseri, a valuable special teams player, fractured his arm two weeks ago, and free safety Rafael Bush suffered a broken fibula a week ago.
–If he wants to join the exclusive club of quarterbacks who beat every franchise, quarterback Drew Brees must wait until next time, whenever that may be.
The only quarterbacks to defeat all 32 franchises are Brett Favre and Peyton Manning, the latter completing the feat while leading the Denver Broncos to a win over the Indianapolis Colts in the season opener in September.
Brees previously played the Ravens in 2003, when he was with the San Diego Chargers, and 2006 and 2010 with the Saints, without the prerequisite W to allow entry into that exclusive quarterback club.
–The loss to the Ravens also ended a long winning streak for the Saints in prime-time games in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
The Saints had won 12 in a row in the building dating to the 2010 season, which the Elias Sports Bureau said was the longest prime-time home-field winning streak for any NFL team since the 1970 merger.
The setback also was one of the few on Monday Night Football since Sean Payton took over in 2006. Prior to his arrival, the Saints were 6-15 on Monday night, but they were 11-3 under him until falling to the Ravens. The franchise is now 17-19 all-time on MNF.
–A 67-yard run by wide receiver Joseph Morgan on a reverse on the second play from scrimmage was the longest rushing play by the Saints in a decade.
Deuce McAllister had a 71-yard jaunt against the Carolina Panthers in the 2004 season finale.
