Gruden: Griffin will start this week
Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden said Robert Griffin will remain the starting quarterback this week, although the coach indicated Monday that he was dissatisfied with the passing game and left open the option of making a change.
Griffin struggled to move the ball again Sunday in a 17-13 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. He completed 11 of 19 passes for just 106 yards and was sacked five times.
Gruden made it clear that was not good enough, telling reporters, “We feel we have some weapons. To have 100 yards or 80 yards passing is unheard of in this day and age with the wide receivers we have.”
Since returning from an ankle injury that sidelined him for six weeks, Griffin has completed 52 of 79 passes for 564 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions in losses to Minnesota, Tampa Bay and San Francisco. The offense has scored just 20 points the past two games.
Meanwhile, Washington placed linebacker Adam Hayward on injured reserve Monday and signed practice-squad linebacker Steve Beauharnais to the 53-man roster.
Hayward, Washington’s special-teams captain, suffered a broken leg Sunday.
Beauharnais was signed to the Redskins’ practice squad on Oct. 8.
