NFL roundup: Ryan fined $100,000 for profanity

Published

on

The NFL fined New York Jets coach Rex Ryan $100,000 for shouting a profanity that was caught on camera following the Jets’ victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday.

Ryan is a repeat offender of the NFL’s rule against swearing, which is why the fine is so high. He had been fined $75,000 by the NFL in 2011 for yelling at a fan and was fined $50,000 by the Jets for displaying his middle finger in a picture taken in 2010.

On Sunday, a camera captured Ryan shouting at someone as the game ended.

It’s unclear which person Ryan’s words were directed toward, but he was upset when Steelers safety Mike Mitchell tried to jump over the line to block a Jets’ center snap when the Jets were in the victory formation. Ryan later called the move “bush league.”

—Cleveland Browns defensive lineman Phil Taylor will be placed on season-ending injury reserve because of a knee injury, head coach Mike Pettine said.

Taylor had arthroscopic surgery on his knee in October, but this injury is unrelated to that.

—Houston Texans running back Arian Foster is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns because of a groin injury. However, the Houston Chronicle reported that Foster is unlikely to play.

If Foster cannot play, rookie Alfred Blue could get the majority of carries at tailback.

—Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch officially is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs, but he participated fully in Friday’s practice, suggesting he is likely to play.

Lynch had missed the previous two days of practice with rib and calf injuries. However, head coach Pete Carroll said Lynch had a good practice Friday.

—The Chicago Bears announced that wide receiver Marquess Wilson was activated and is expected to play in Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Wilson has yet to play in a game this year after suffering a fractured clavicle during offseason practice.

–Buffalo Bills cornerback Leodis McKelvin suffered a fractured ankle in Thursday night’s loss and is out indefinitely. He fell awkwardly on his ankle as he missed a tackle on a 33-yard run by Dolphins back Lamar Miller in the second quarter.

–Green Bay Packers tight end Brandon Bostick has been ruled out with a hip injury for Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Head coach Mike McCarthy said Bostick might be able to come back as soon as next week.

–Cincinnati Bengals running back Giovani Bernard was unable to practice Friday, putting him in danger of missing Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints.

Bernard has missed the last two games with hip and clavicle issues suffered in Week 8.

–The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed punter Jacob Schum to the practice squad. The Bucs apparently are looking for options as the team’s punter, Michael Koenen, is last in the NFL in punting average. He averaged only 30.3 yards in Sunday’s 27-17 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

—Cornerback Champ Bailey will sign a one-day contract with the Denver Broncos, so he can retire as a member of that team, the Broncos announced Friday.
