Seahawks put TE Miller on IR

Published

on

The Seattle Seahawks placed Zach Miller on injured reserve with the tight end headed for a second surgery on his injured ankle.

Miller is the second Seattle starter lost for the season in as many days, as the Seahawks placed defensive tackle Brandon Mebane on IR on Tuesday.

Miller, an eight-year veteran, originally hurt his ankle against the San Diego Chargers in Week 2 and played against the Denver Broncos in Week 3. Miller had ankle surgery in Week 4, but the surgery didn’t completely fix his ankle injury and he now will need a second surgical procedure, coach Pete Carroll said.

“It never really responded the way that they hoped,” Carroll said Wednesday.

Backup tight end Luke Willson, who has started for Miller since Week 5, sprained his ankle for the second time this season against the New York Giants on Sunday. He went through Wednesday’s walk-through practice and could play against the Kansas City Chiefs this week, Carroll said..

Reserve tight end Cooper Helfet bruised his knee against the Giants, but has a good chance to play on Sunday, Carroll said.

The injuries to Willson and Helfet will likely mean an increased role for Tony Moeaki, who signed with the Seahawks last week. Moeaki played his first three seasons for the Kansas City Chiefs, Sunday’s opponent.

The team signed tight end RaShaun Allen off the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad on Tuesday to fill Mebane’s roster spot. Allen signed with Seattle as an undrafted rookie on May 19 and saw action in the Oct. 19 loss to St. Louis before being released and rejoining the practice squad. He was released Oct. 29 and signed with the Vikings’ practice squad on Nov. 3.

The Seahawks made a flurry of moves Wednesday, including signing linebacker Allen Bradford off the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad. Bradford played running back for Carroll at USC and was converted to linebacker with the Seahawks before being released last year. He played in 10 games for the New York Giants last season and spent this preseason with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where the head coach is Gus Bradley, the Seahawks’ former defensive coordinator, but Bradford was released prior to the season.

The Seahawks also released linebacker L.J. Fort from the practice squad and placed running back Demitrius Bronson and defensive end Julius Warmsley on practice squad/injured reserve and signed fullback Stanley Havili, defensive end Ryan Robinson and running back Cierre Wood to the practice squad.

Havilli also played for Carroll at USC, while Wood played for Notre Dame.
