Jets 20, Steelers 13
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Safety Jaiquawn Jarrett forced three turnovers Sunday as the New York Jets snapped an eight-game losing streak with a stunning 20-13 upset of the Pittsburgh Steelers at MetLife Stadium.
The Jets (2-8) had just three turnovers all season entering the game but forced four turnovers in upsetting the record-setting Steelers (6-4), who had scored 124 points in winning their previous three games.
Quarterback Michael Vick was 10 of 18 for 132 yards and two touchdowns, including a 67-yard strike to wide receiver T.J. Graham during the Jets’ 17-point first quarter. Vick rushed eight times for 39 yards and became the first quarterback to rush for 6,000 career yards.
The Steelers, who fell from a first-place tie in the AFC North with the Cleveland Browns, pulled within a touchdown on an 80-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to wide receiver Martavis Bryant with 1:16 left, but the Jets recovered the subsequent onside kick.
Roethlisberger, who set an NFL record by throwing for six touchdown passes in each of his previous two games was 30 of 43 for 343 yards and two interceptions.
The Jets scored on their first three possessions to both enliven and stun a crowd that featured plenty of fans decked out in black-and-yellow.
Nick Folk’s 23-yard field goal capped a 14-play, 72-yard, game-opening drive by the Jets, who limited the Steelers to one first down on the subsequent possession.
On the first play of the Jets’ next series, Vick and running back Chris Ivory sold a fake perfectly and Vick dropped a tight spiral right into the hands of a double covered Graham, who shook free and raced into the end zone for the 67-yard touchdown.
Brown fumbled on the Steelers’ next play from scrimmage and Jarrett recovered. Five plays later, Vick found tight end Jace Amaro in the back of the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown.
The Steelers turned the ball over twice in the second quarter, when Jarrett picked off Roethlisberger in the red zone and Graham recovered a muffed punt by Brown. But the Jets couldn’t convert either turnover into points and Folk’s miss of a 45-yarder with 55 seconds left set up a frantic drive by the Steelers, who pulled within 17-3 when kicker Shaun Suisham booted a career-long 53-yarder as time expired.
The Jets’ defense continued to dictate the game in the second half. Jarrett intercepted Roethlisberger at the Jets’ 20-yard-line to end the Steelers’ first series. Pittsburgh went three-and-out on its next possession, after which the Jets marched 48 yards in 10 plays to set up a 30-yard field goal by Folk.
The Steelers got inside the Jets’ 5-yard line in the final minute of the third, but Bell was dragged down for a loss of a yard on third-and-1 from the 4 and Suisham missed a 23-yard field goal — the shortest miss of the season in the NFL — on the first play of the fourth quarter.
NOTES: The Jets’ two longest winless streaks each spanned two seasons. They went 0-8-1 from Dec. 6, 1964 through Oct. 23, 1965 and 0-12 from Dec. 3, 1995 through Oct. 20, 1996. … The previous career long reception for Jets WR T.J. Graham was a 51-yard grab he recorded while playing for the Buffalo Bills on Dec. 2, 2012. … Among the Steelers’ inactives was S Troy Polamalu, who suffered a sprained knee in last Sunday’s win over the Baltimore Ravens. … The 53-yard field goal by Steelers K Shaun Suisham was just the fifth 50-yarder of his career.
