Rice ruling expected before Thanksgiving
The judge overseeing the appeal of former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice’s indefinite suspension plans to make a ruling before Thanksgiving, according to CBS Sports.
Judge Barbara Jones asked lawyers in the case to present their closing arguments to her by this Thursday with the understanding that she would rule within 10 days from then.
Jones issued a gag order in the case. She spent two days last week meeting with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, Rice, his wife Janay and Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome to gather information and determine if Goodell had ruled in “an arbitrary and capricious manner” after a video emerged of Rice punching and knocking out his wife in an elevator. At the time, Rice’s two-game suspension was about to expire before being expanded to indefinitely. Rice was then released by the Ravens.
The NFL players’ union and Rice’s attorneys claim that the video evidence was available long before the NFL and the Ravens decided on Rice’s punishment and that they knew about its existence. The NFLPA believes that Rice was punished twice for the same incident since no new transgressions were committed when the league expanded his suspension and the team let him go.
Goodell has asserted that Rice had not been as forthcoming about the incident as he should have been.
If Jones rules in favor of Rice, he could be reinstated later this month. It is possible that Jones could make a ruling by Nov. 17, but the more likely date is Nov. 24.
