Report: NFL rejects Peterson reinstatement
With no timetable for a decision on Adrian Peterson’s playing status, the NFL rejected an attempt at immediate reinstatement by the Minnesota Vikings’ running back.
There are several steps ahead in the NFL’s review of facts and court documents before Peterson’s fate is determined.
FOX Sports first reported the league denied Peterson’s bid to be made eligible to play for the Vikings at Chicago in Week 11. The Vikings are on bye this week.
Peterson pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor assault charge, was placed on probation and ordered to pay a $4,000 fine. The charge was reduced from felony child abuse for an incident in which Peterson admittedly used a tree branch to whip his 4-year-old son.
Attorney Rusty Hardin said Peterson, 29, looks forward to resuming his career.
“It only takes an airplane trip to do it,” Hardin told Pro Football Talk. “I’m hoping that can be done quickly and I’m hoping the NFL is receptive to it and agrees to it and get this issue off the front page, because it’s time for him to go back and … play football.”
The Vikings released a brief statement and general manager declined comment regarding Tuesday’s development. Minnesota is 4-5 this season.
“The Vikings are aware of today’s plea agreement involving Adrian Peterson. We will have further comment at the appropriate time,” the team statement read.
The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported that the Vikings continue to have internal discussions about whether Peterson should be allowed to play this season.
