EAST RUTHERFORD, N. J. — New York Giants linebacker Jon Beason underwent season-ending surgery on his big toe last week to address an injury that dated back to June 12 in OTA practice.

Despite repeated attempts to play through the injury as it healed, Beason finally admitted last week during an interview with WFAN that he has been trying to play without a crucial ligament in the big toe on his right foot and that his injury had “progressively gotten worse” thanks to his attempts to play through it.

“He tried (to come back),” head coach Tom Coughlin said. “It actually became a little bit different kind of an injury, but same area. He gave everything he had, (and) got the doctor’s approval, but unfortunately it didn’t work.”

A three-time Pro Bowl player, Beason, who signed a three-year, $16.8 million contract in March, has had a string of misfortunes regarding injuries since 2011 that has seen him land on the injured reserve list three times. Since 2011, he has played in just 24 regular-season games.

This year, he made it through two complete games, in weeks one and six, but otherwise had to leave two other games early after aggravating his injury.

Beason becomes the 10th player added to the Giants’ season-ending injured reserve list. Coughlin said that the Giants would continue with Jameel McClain playing for Beason in the middle.

Rookie Devon Kennard, who said he has taken some snaps in the middle in the team’s nickel package, will presumably be the starter the rest of the way out on the strong side, McClain’s previous spot, in the base defense.

Coughlin said he hopes that once Beason is well enough, he will stay around the team the rest of the season.

“Hopefully we’re not going to lose anything in terms of his presence,” Coughlin said. “I think he’s going to have to be away a little bit, but then he’ll return and we’ll have him in meetings, etc. I’m looking forward to that part, anyway.”
