Bills 43, Jets 23
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Quarterback Kyle Orton threw four touchdown passes Sunday afternoon, when the Buffalo Bills scored 13 points off six New York Jets turnovers in a 43-23 win at MetLife Stadium.
Wide receivers Robert Woods and Sammy Watkins and tight ends Lee Smith and Scott Chandler all had a touchdown catch for the Bills (5-3), who won their second straight to reach the midway point of the season with a winning record for just the third time since 1999, the last time they made the playoffs.
The Jets (1-7) have lost seven in a row, their longest losing streak since the 2005 squad dropped seven straight. Running back Chris Ivory had 43 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
Wide receiver Percy Harvin, playing his first game for the Jets since being acquired from the Seattle Seahawks on Oct. 17, had three catches for 22 yards and four carries for 28 yards.
Orton was just 10 of 17 for 238 yards but avoided the types of mistakes that doomed Jets counterparts Geno Smith and Michael Vick, each of whom accounted for three turnovers.
Smith was benched for Vick — perhaps for good — after throwing interceptions on three straight series in the first quarter. He finished two of eight for five yards. Smith is the first quarterback with two completions and three interceptions in a game since Rex Grossman did it for the Chicago Bears on Dec. 31, 2006.
Vick directed three scoring drives in the first half to pull the Jets within 24-17 at the half before he slumped in the second half. He finished 18 of 36 for 153 yards and one interception and rushed eight times for 69 yards, though he lost two fumbles.
With Vick warming up on the sideline following Smith’s third interception, Orton extended the Bills’ lead to 14-0 by tossing a one-yard touchdown pass to Lee Smith.
Vick then directed a 13-play, 76-yard touchdown drive that spanned the first and second quarter and ended with Ivory’s two-yard touchdown run.
The Bills answered with a two-yard touchdown run by running back Frank Summers two plays after an 84-yard completion from Orton to Watkins, who began celebrating around the 20-yard line before he was caught from behind by Jets wide receiver/cornerback Saalim Hakim.
A fumble by Vick with 7:46 left in the half led to a 53-yard field goal by kicker Dan Carpenter, but Vick redeemed himself by leading two scoring drives. Ivory’s second touchdown run with 1:55 left ended an 11-play, 74-yard march. The Jets then forced the Bills to punt with 40 seconds left and a pair of Vick completions set up a 55-yard field goal by kicker Nick Folk as time expired.
But the Jets’ comeback hopes ended in a third quarter in which they had more turnovers (two) than first downs (one).
Bills defensive tackle Stefan Charles recovered a Vick fumble at the Jets’ 10-yard line to set up a 29-yard field goal by Carpenter. The Jets’ next drive ended when Vick badly overthrew wide receiver Jeremy Kerley and was picked off by safety Da’Norris Searcy, who returned the ball to the New York 21-yard line.
Three plays later, Orton tossed a 12-yard touchdown pass to Chandler to extend the lead to 37-17. Orton ended the Bills’ next series by throwing a 61-yard touchdown pass to Watkins, who eluded the tackle of cornerback Darrin Walls and waltzed untouched into the end zone.
Jets running back Bilal Powell rushed for a three-yard touchdown with 4:11 left.
NOTES: Jets QB Geno Smith has thrown at least one interception in 19 of his 24 career starts. … Among the Jets’ inactives were WR Greg Salas (ankle, wrist) and LB Trevor Reilly (knee), each of whom were listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report. … Bills WR Robert Woods and DT Kyle Williams each exited with back injuries in the second quarter. … The 84-yard pass from Bills QB Kyle Orton to WR Sammy Watkins was the longest pass not resulting in a touchdown since Lions QB Matthew Stafford and WR Calvin Johnson hooked up for an 87-yard gain Oct. 27, 2013. … Bills K Dan Carpenter (seven) and Jets K Nick Folk (five) have combined for 12 field goals of 50 yards or longer since the start of last season.
