Texans 30, Titans 16

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Houston found the perfect cure for its three-game losing streak: A trip to LP Field.

Running back Arian Foster rushed for 151 yards and scored three touchdowns Sunday as the Texans ruined Tennessee quarterback Zach Mettenberger’s first NFL start with a 30-16 win.

Foster broke a 3-3 tie with six minutes left in the second quarter with a 34-yard scoring run, then added a 1-yard plunge with 5:42 remaining in the third quarter that finished a 98-yard drive and expanded Houston’s lead to 27-3.

Mettenberger threw his first NFL touchdown pass, a 6-yarder to tight end Delanie Walker, with 2:12 left in the third, and added a 12-yard scoring strike to wide receiver Justin Hunter with 56 seconds remaining in the game.

But it was a rough initiation for Mettenberger, who was hampered by an offensive line that couldn’t consistently give him a clean pocket or block for the run. Tennessee managed only 36 yards on the ground.

Mettenberger completed 27 of 41 passes for 299 yards and an interception that set up one of three field goals by Texans placekicker Randy Bullock, a 29-yarder with 19 seconds left in the first half which made the halftime score 13-3.

Houston defensive end J.J. Watt pressured Mettenberger consistently, recording a pair of sacks and also knocking down a pass. Watt’s strip-sack on the second half’s third play led to a fumble that was recovered by defensive end Tim Jamison, setting up Foster’s 5-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick for a 20-3 lead with 12:35 remaining.

Fitzpatrick, who played with the Titans last year, connected on 19 of 35 passes for 227 yards despite being sacked five times. Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins had five catches for 95 yards.

The Texans improved to 4-4, while Tennessee (2-6) lost for the sixth time in seven games.

NOTES: Tennessee RB Shonn Greene was active despite being arrested Friday night on multiple charges after trying to evade a ticket for parking in a handicapped spot, and started. Greene ran for a yard on the first play, his only carry of the day. … Houston LB Brian Cushing (knee) was declared inactive and replaced by Akeem Dent. … Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) was active for the first time since the season opener, although Whitney Mercilus started in his place.
