Lions 22, Falcons 21

Matt Prater hit a 48-yard field goal on the game’s last play and the Detroit Lions erased a 21-point halftime deficit to defeat the Atlanta Falcons 22-21 on Sunday at Wembley Stadium in London.

Matthew Stafford passed for 325 yards and two touchdowns for the Lions (6-2). Stafford broke Bobby Layne’s franchise record of 118 touchdown passes with his 59-yard, third-quarter strike to wide receiver Golden Tate, who caught seven passes for 151 yards.

Prater’s made field goal came after a delay-of-game penalty against Detroit nullified a missed 43-yard attempt.

Matt Ryan threw two first-quarter touchdown passes but Atlanta (2-6) lost for the fifth consecutive time.

Ryan, who was intercepted once, completed 20 of 27 passes for 228 yards. Veteran running back Steven Jackson added 60 rushing yards and a touchdown for the Falcons, who led 21-0 at halftime.

The 9:30 a.m. ET start was the earliest in league history.

The Lions’ top wide receiver and running back missed the game with injuries. Perennial All-Pro Calvin Johnson was sidelined for the third consecutive game by a high ankle sprain, while Reggie Bush was also nursing an ankle injury.

Defensive tackle Nick Fairley suffered a right knee injury during the second quarter when teammate Ndamukong Suh fell on him going for a sack.

The Falcons got the early jump, driving 80 yards after the opening kickoff for the first touchdown. Ryan passed for 64 yards, including the final seven yards to running back Devonta Freeman for the rookie’s first career touchdown reception.

Ryan completed all four of his passes on Atlanta’s next drive, including a one-yarder to backup tight end Bear Pascoe to make it 14-0.

Lions cornerback Rashean Mathis had a 103-yard interception return for a touchdown nullified during the second quarter by his own pass interference penalty. Jackson then capped off an 89-yard drive with a one-yard plunge.

Prater’s 22-yard field goal midway through the third put Detroit on the board. Stafford connected with Tate on third-and-25 to slice Atlanta’s lead to 21-10 with 4:48 left in the quarter. The Falcons secondary allowed Tate to break free along the right sideline and a scrambling Stafford delivered the 59-yard bomb.

Cornerback Cassius Vaughn’s 43-yard return of an ill-advised Ryan pass set up the Lions’ next score, Prater’s 20-yard field goal seconds into the fourth quarter.

The Lions pulled within two, 21-19, with 4:01 left on Stafford’s five-yard pass to running back Theo Riddick but his two-yard conversion attempt to Tate was incomplete.

Detroit got the ball back with 1:38 remaining deep in its territory. Completions to Tate, Riddick and Jeremy Ross and a defensive holding penalty put the Lions in field-goal position.
