With rookie struggling, Ravens hope Monroe returns

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — After enduring some rough moments over the past month while undrafted rookie offensive tackle James Hurst learned on the job, the Baltimore Ravens hope to get veteran tackle Eugene Monroe back on the field Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Monroe missed the past four games after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. He returned to practice and participated fully Wednesday along with left guard Kelechi Osemele, who is wearing a brace on his bruised, hyperextended right knee.

“It gets frustrating after a while being in a training room every day,” Monroe said. “Missing out on games, man, that was really the first stretch of my career where I was out for consecutive weeks.

“It was different, but it was needed. I needed to get healthy, and now that’s happened. I’m just glad to be back out there. I feel real good about it.”

Hurst started in Monroe’s place and produced mixed results, allowing three sacks in a loss to the Indianapolis Colts and being penalized for holding three times Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.

Osemele missed the past two games, forcing the Ravens to go with an all-rookie left side comprised of Hurst and left guard John Urschel.

Osemele declined an interview request.
