Minus Starr, Favre scraps Packers reunion

Published

on

Brett Favre’s reunion with the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field next month is on hold, the former quarterback told ESPN.

Favre was scheduled to be part of a pregame ceremony on the field with Bart Starr on Nov. 9 before the Packers-Chicago Bears “Monday Night Football” game. Starr recently had a second stroke and recently had a heart attack, and is unlikely to be fit for the appearance. Favre told ESPN he doesn’t want to participate until Starr can also be there.

“It was my idea to do it,” Favre said. “And now that Bart can’t, I just don’t think I will.”

That could mean Favre will not appear at a game any time soon, though he is scheduled to be honored in Green Bay next summer.

Six years removed from his acrimonious divorce from the franchise he represented for 16 years, Favre will be inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame on July 18, 2015, during the annual Hall of Fame Induction Banquet at Lambeau Field. Also that night, the Packers will retire Favre’s No. 4.

Favre will be the 154th person inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame since its inaugural class was honored in 1970. It is only the sixth time just one person will be enshrined, putting Favre in select company with some of his contemporaries, including general manager Ron Wolf (2000), Harlan (2004), defensive end Reggie White (2006) and head coach Mike Holmgren in (2012).

The other standalone ceremony was in 1995 for William Brault, founder of the Packers Hall of Fame.
