OLB Orakpo out for season; done in Washington?

Published

on

Outside linebacker Brian Orakpo’s season is over in Washington, and it’s fair to wonder if his career with the Redskins also came to end Sunday.

Orakpo tore his right pectoral muscle in Sunday’s win over the Tennessee Titans and was placed on season-ending injured reserve. Orakpo’s 2011 season ended early because of the same injury to his left pectoral muscle, and just two games into the 2012 season he went down with another pectoral tear.

He was hurt on the second play of the fourth quarter, and head coach Jay Gruden said Sunday night the injury was known to be “significant.” Tests Monday confirmed Orakpo would not be able to return to the field this season.

Second-round rookie Trent Murphy will take over Orakpo’s spot in the Redskins’ 3-4 defense at right outside linebacker.

Orakpo, who also had a sprained ankle and played through a finger injury this season, had just one-half sack in seven games.

The former first-round pick and three-time Pro Bowl pick was playing under the one-year franchise designation that pays his $11.4 million and is scheduled to become a free agent in March. It is unlikely the Redskins will set the market for Orakpo but, if other teams are lukewarm about signing him, Washington could bring him back on a deal weighted with performance-based incentives.
